Two Vancouver artists, Althea Thauberger and Stephen Waddell, are finalists for this year's $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award.
Shannon Bool, based in Berlin, is the third artist on the short list for the award, billed as "the largest peer-nominated and peer-reviewed celebration of excellence in Canadian contemporary photography."
The winner will be announced May 7.
The award recognizes the achievements of established mid-to-late-career photo-based artists in Canada.
The 2019 jurors were artist Edward Burtynsky, the jury's chair; writer and curator Candice Hopkins; artist Mark Lewis; and Brian Sholis, an editor, curator and writer.
Along with the cash prize, the winner is given a solo exhibition during the Contact Photography Festival in Toronto and a book deal with German publisher Steidl. The two finalists each receive $10,000.
The award was founded in 2010. Last year's winner was Moyra Davey.
