UBC's Museum of Anthropology Closes for Seismic Upgrades
The Museum of Anthropology at UBC is closed until late this year for seismic upgrading.
The Vancouver museum is rebuilding its Great Hall, which houses a valuable collection of Indigenous art, to better withstand a major earthquake.
"When the project is complete the Great Hall will look like it does now with some improvements, including new lighting and carpeting," the museum says.
Skylights, lighting, roofing and window coverings elsewhere in the building will also be updated.
Feedback from the Arthur Erickson Foundation is helping preserve the building's architectural character and heritage values, the museum says.
Massive wooden carvings in the Great Hall have been moved elsewhere in the museum, in consultation with local Indigenous nations, who will have continued access to the collection.
The museum says it will offer behind-the-scenes tours, digital school programs and virtual events during the closure.
