A new fee schedule for visual and media artists is now in effect in Canada.
The schedule of minimum recommended fees, provided by two groups representing artists, CARFAC and RAAV, is aimed at improving working conditions for artists.
It includes a yearly two-per-cent increase in each of the next four years.
Other changes reflect recommendations made in consultation with media arts and performance art communities.
The fee schedule covers royalties for the exhibition and reproduction of an artist’s work, as well as various fees for professional services. It can be found at www.carfac-raav.ca.
For instance, the schedule sets a minimum of $3,903 for a retrospective at a large Canadian art gallery and $2,077 for a solo show at a small gallery.
The new schedule, the first major overhaul since 2007, came into effect Jan. 1.
CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation / Le Front des artistes canadiens) is an artist-run organization founded in 1968, by artists for artists. It is certified as the national representative organization of professional visual and media artists in Canada.
Founded in 1990, RAAV (Le Regroupement des artistes en arts visuals du Québec) is the organization representing professional visual and media artists from Quebec at the federal level.
The founding principle of both organizations is that artists, like professionals in other fields, must be paid fairly for their creative output and services.
