Upgrades to Indigenous Cultural Treasure at Royal BC Museum
The Royal BC Museum in Victoria recently installed a new cedar roof on Wawadiťła, known to many as Mungo Martin House.
Canadian Heritage provided $157,670 for the new roof, which consists of metal sandwiched between two layers of wood.
David Knox, Martin's great-grandson, expressed thanks on behalf of his family for efforts to preserve the building, built by Martin in 1953.
Located steps from the museum, the Indigenous-run space embodies the rights and privileges of Martin's family, and contains Indigenous house posts, carvings, painted curtains, a dance screen and a log drum.
