Vancouver city council recently approved more than $5.8 million in cultural grants to 195 organizations — including 14 new groups — to support artistic, cultural and creative work.
"Investing in local groups is a key element to strengthening Vancouver's already thriving arts and culture scene," says Mayor Kennedy Stewart. "The grants approved by council recognize the impact these diverse groups have — and will continue to have — on our city."
The grants support a range of cultural organizations:
• The Savage Society's Indigenous storytelling productions
• The Cultch's theatre, dance, music and visual arts
• Vancouver Co-operative Radio, which programs in over 12 languages
• The Powell Street Festival Society's annual celebration of Japanese-Canadian arts and culture
• Pride In Art Society's annual Queer Arts Festival and the new SUM Gallery for queer art
• Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture
Council also approved funding to five major cultural institutions, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Museum of Vancouver, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, the Vancouver Maritime Museum and Science World.
