The Vancouver Art Gallery has announced this week that construction costs on its new building have ballooned from $400 million to $600 million.
A revised capital project timeline is underway “to address rising costs through changes to the building design, while simultaneously looking for opportunities to create a multi-faceted cultural hub for the province of British Columbia and Canada,” according to the news release.
As a result of the design changes, there will be decreased construction at the site, the news release states. So far the gallery team has raised more than $350 million and finished “the first stage of pre-construction work” at the new location.
The gallery made the announcement the same week it announced it is adding 349 works to its permanent collection, acquired through purchases and donations from Canadian and international donors. The works include pieces by Teresita Fernánde, Geoffrey Farmer, Beau Dick, Ron Terada, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Elizabeth McIntosh, Paul Wong, Caroline Monnet and others.
