Vancouver Art Gallery Offers Free First Friday Night Admission
The Vancouver Art Gallery is offering free public admission the first Friday of the month from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting May 5.
The news comes less than two weeks after the gallery announced it will close on Tuesdays, starting in May, thus ending its popular $5 by-donation admissions.
At that time, the gallery announced it is introducing a $5 monthly pass that provides unlimited gallery access. The pass is available only with an initial one-time $29 activation fee – the current adult entry fee. The pass can be renewed for $5 in following months.
The free Friday nights go a step further, building accessibility for cash-strapped Vancouver residents, who are facing escalating rents and a rising cost of living.
"These free first Friday nights, presented by BMO, will provide visitors with increased access to the gallery, opening and expanding the world of art to a broader audience, including those who may otherwise not be able to afford the cost of admission," the gallery said in a news release.
BMO is also donating $1.5 million to the Vancouver Art Gallery's new building project, the statement said.
Gallery admission is already free for youth aged 18 and younger.
The gallery's tiered membership system offers a basic no-frills annual pass for $58, as well as more expensive annual memberships with extra benefits, such as guest passes and discounts at the gallery shop and bistro.
