Alfredo Jaar, "roaming-the-planet"
The Vancouver Biennale is presenting the Canadian debut of Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar's A Logo For America downtown at the corner of Robson and Granville streets until Aug. 26.
Jaar's installation, organized by the biennale’s American curator, Jeffrey Uslip, explores cultural, social and political pressures placed on individuals, the environment and aesthetics in the current cultural climate.
Originally screened in New York City in 1987 at the height of Ronald Reagan's presidency, it includes images of America that suddenly appear and disappear, becoming larger and more ominous. Diagrammatic illustrations are deconstructed and superimposed over a larger map of the Americas, with the words: “This is not America.”
Jaar, who is based in New York, is an artist, architect and filmmaker. He has participated in international biennales, including Venice and São Paulo, and has exhibited in art galleries around the world.
