Vancouver's Science World Launches Artist Residency Project
Vancouver's Science World has launched its artist-in-residence program with Bettina Harvey, a multidisciplinary artist whose recent work has focused on the microscopic world in her backyard in Tsawwassen, B.C.
'I’ll be able to work with brilliant scientists and have access to other resources I may not have otherwise," says Harvey.
"I’ll be creating a variety of new works, such as large-scale drawings of microscopic life forms, to explore the connection of how the smallest of organisms play a role in our world."
Harvey, who worked on a bachelor's degree in fine arts at Concordia University in Montreal, spent years working as a horticulturalist and gardener for the City of Vancouver, eventually returning to art as a way to investigate ecological systems and their connections to the human world.
The program aims to connect the realms of art and science in engaging and informal ways, while allowing artists to create a new body of work or expand an existing one. Residency artists receive a $3,000 stipend and studio space at Science World.
Visitors can watch Harvey at work in Science World's first-floor atrium. She will be on site on various days between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15.
Her residency continues until Feb. 27.
Artists interested in applying can email art@scienceworld.ca for information.
