Victoria Curator Awarded $50,000 Fellowship
Haema Sivanesan, curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, has been awarded a $50,000 curatorial research fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
“Sivanesan’s exploration of the influence of 1960s' engaged Buddhism on artistic practice is especially timely in this moment of widespread artistic involvement with social, cultural and political issues," said Rachel Bers, the foundation's program director.
"Her investigation into efforts to reduce suffering in the world promises to carve out new territory in contemporary art scholarship.”
The fellowship will support Sivanesan's research, in partnership with the University of Victoria, and lead to an exhibition, In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art and Social Practice. The project will bring together artists, scholars and community activists.
In accordance with Warhol’s will, the foundation's mission is the advancement of the visual arts. To date, it has given more than $200 million in cash grants to some 1,000 arts organizations and has also donated 52,786 works of art to 322 institutions worldwide.
