The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will host an exhibition by the winners of last year's Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts, in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts.
The exhibition, which opens Oct. 15, is curated by Jaimie Isaac, the gallery's chief curator. It runs until March 5.
Eight people were recognized for their exceptional careers in the visual and media arts.
Six awards recognize artistic achievements. They were won by Germaine Arnaktauyok, Lori Blondeau, Dempsey Bob, Luc Courchesne, Bonnie Devine and Cheryl L’Hirondelle. One, the Saidye Bronfman Award, won by Lou Lynn, recognizes excellence in the fine crafts and another recognizes an outstanding contribution to contemporary visual arts, media arts or fine crafts, won by Bryce Kanbara.
Each winner receives a medallion produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and a cash prize of $25,000.
A free all-day open house runs Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a panel discussion by the winning artists from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The awards, created in 1999, have honoured nearly 200 artists and arts professionals.
