The Winnipeg Art Gallery and Indigenous Music are holding a virtual powwow on June 21 to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The grand entry is at 1 p.m. and the event will be live streamed on Facebook from the gallery.
Participants are encouraged to don regalia and dance along homes or yards and use the hashtag #atwag in social media posts for a chance to win cash.
Livestream details will be posted in the Facebook event.
Performers include Summer Bear Dance Troupe, Spence Tradition, Shanley Spence and Darryl Buck, and an Inuit throat singing mother-daughter duo.
Shaneen Robinson-Desjarlais of Indigenous Music will emcee the event.
Powwows celebrate Indigenous traditions, families and culture, bringing together young and old for dancing, singing, giveaways, contests and food.
"The powwow trail isn't the same this year with the COVID-19 physical distancing guidelines," says Julia Lafreniere, the gallery's manager of Indigenous initiatives. "My hope is that this National Indigenous Peoples Day event will bring the fun of powwows and celebration of Indigenous culture into people's homes for an afternoon."
