WAG Executive Director Stephen Borys Elected to Board of Canadian Museums Association
Winnipeg, April 26, 1012
Stephen Borys, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Museums Association (CMA).
“The CMA links non-profit galleries, history and art museums, science centres, historic sites, archives, even zoos, right across the country,” says Borys. “Whether large metropolitan or rural community museums, they are all dedicated to preserving and presenting Canada’s cultural heritage. Over the last sixty years, Canadian museums have developed an international reputation for excellent programming, high standards of professionalism, and dedicated stakeholder and public engagement. Much of this has been made possible through the CMA, and as a Board member I’m looking forward to being more closely involved in these national initiatives.”
Borys adds that this is an opportune moment for the Winnipeg Art Gallery to increase its participation with the CMA as the WAG is celebrating its centenary this year. Borys, who holds teaching posts at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, also serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Museum Directors Organization (CAMDO), and is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD). He holds a PhD in Art History from McGill University, and is the recipient of several national research and exhibition grants, including awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Heritage, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Samuel Kress Foundation. Borys is a graduate of the Getty’s Museum Leadership Institute and the Royal Collections Studies Program, London
Established in 1947, the Canadian Museums Association is the national organization for the advancement of Canadian museums. The CMA supports its nearly 2,000 members with training and professional development programs, conferences, publications, networking opportunities, a body of knowledge, and a dedicated staff.
