Yellowknife artist Walt Humphries was upset to learn that a mural he painted in 1992 for the Stanton Territorial Hospital has been sitting face-up on a pile of gravel beside the new emergency entrance parking lot.
The mural was taken down three years ago to make way for construction of a new hospital. Humphries says he was assured at the time that it would be taken care of until it could be reinstalled
But the mural is starting to warp and crack within its steel frame.
"You can see where the water's getting in," he told CBC.
Humphries, also a prospector and newspaper columnist, recently had a solo show at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
He believes the piece can be saved and has written to the territorial government asking for help.
"I'd hate to see this lost," Humphries said. "You do art so people can enjoy it. It gives a sense of place."
