Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies welcomes Vincent Varga as Museum Director

The  Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation and the  Whyte  Museum  of the Canadian Rockies welcome Vincent Varga  to the position of  Museum Director, effective immediately.

As Museum Director, working closely with the Whyte Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Varga will  provide strategic direction and curatorial  direction to the  Museum’s staff and advice to the Whyte Foundation ’s board of directors.

Board President, Tristan White Jones shared, “The Whyte Museum is a unique organization which is seeking to move forward in rapidly changing times. Vincent possesses the ability to ensure the continued relevance, growth, sustainability and accessibility of the Museum’s collections within the community.”

Varga has over 30 years of leadership, management and curatorial experience within regional, national and international contexts in the not-for-profit public arts and culture sector. Most recently, Varga guided the Mendel Art Gallery, The Banff Centre, The McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the  Edmonton Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Alberta) through major transitions.

He brings to the Whyte Museum strong strategic, analytical, planning, fund development and program skills and a hands-on leadership style. Varga is passionate about the integral and transformative role the arts. He recognizes how galleries and museums foster excellence in practice, pride in place and history and contribute to sustainable communities.

An Albertan by birth, with a passion for hiking, Varga has a life-long connection to the Canadian Rockies.

Additionally, Anne Ewen now holds the position of Curator of Art and Heritage at the Whyte Museum. Ewen has led the Museum’s curatorial team as Interim Curator of Art and Heritage since November 2012, during which time she organized many outstanding exhibitions including "Picturing the Canadian Pacific Railway". Ewen has worked with several museums and galleries in the capacity of curator, project lead or director, including the Glenbow Museum, The Military Museums of Calgary, Fort Calgary and Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.
