Séamus Gallagher, Laurena Finéus and Joyce Joumaa have been named as the 2024 winners of the William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes for Emerging Artists.
The awards consist of three prizes of $10,000 each and are presented to young emerging Canadian visual artists “whose practice shows potential and is deemed to have the determination and talent to contribute to the legacy of art in Canada.”
Finéus, Gallagher and Joumaa were chosen from 28 finalists who were nominated by artist-run-centres, galleries, and fine arts professionals from across Canada.
The portfolios of the finalists were evaluated by artist Bridget Moser (2023 laureate of The Hnatyshyn Foundation Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Visual Arts and 2015 laureate of a Saunderson Prize) and John G. Hampton, executive director and CEO of the MacKenzie Art Gallery and 2016 laureate of The Hnatyshyn Foundation – TD Bank Group Award for Emerging Curator of Contemporary Canadian Art.
This year marks the 10th edition of the annual prizes, which have doubled this year from $5,000 apiece to $10,00 apiece. Presented by The Hnatyshyn Foundation, the award is funded by Bill and Meredith Saunderson. Thirty artists have been supported by the award since its inception.
