Toronto artist Nurielle Stern has won the $10,000 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery announced.
The finalists were Trevor Baird, of Montreal; Naomi Clement, of London, Ont.; Grace Han, of Winnipeg; Joon Hee Kim, of Oakville, Ont.; Jocelyn Reid, of Calgary; and Zane Wilcox, of Regina.
They will be celebrated in a group exhibition that runs from Sept. 21 to Nov. 17 at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ont.
The award allows early career ceramic artists to undertake a period of independent research or other activities that advance their artistic and professional practice.
Stern is a ceramic sculpture and installation artist. She graduated with an MFA from Alfred University in New York state in 2014. She also studied ceramics at Sheridan College in Toronto and holds a BFA in sculpture and installation from OCAD University in Toronto.
Stern’s most recent exhibition, Unswept Floor (Tesserae), was commissioned by the Gardiner Museum in response to Ai Weiwei: Unbroken. Stern’s upcoming exhibitions include a collaboration with Nicholas Crombach at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and a large-scale commission for the Gardiner Museum in Toronto.
The award was juried by Pascale Girardin, Michele Hardy and Rory MacDonald.
The jury cited Stern's daring investigation of narrative and mastery of her craft. Her award project will see her produce large-scale ceramic sculptures for exhibition, beginning at a residency at the California State University Long Beach Center for Contemporary Ceramics.
