Vancouver artist Noah Friebel, a 2018 graduate of Emily Carr University, is one of three winners of the $10,000 New Generation Photography Award, which recognizes Canadians 35 years and under who work in lens-based art.
The other winners are Curtiss Randolph, of Toronto, and Katherine Takpannie , an Ottawa-based Inuk artist.
They will be featured in two group exhibitions next year: one in Toronto during the Contact Photography Festival in May, and the other in Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada.
They were selected from a long list by a jury headed by Ann Thomas, senior curator, photographs, at the National Gallery of Canada. Other jury members were Winnipeg artist Luther Konadu, who won the prize in 2019; Andrea Kunard, associate curator, photographs, at the National Gallery of Canada; and artists Suzy Lake and Alain Paiement.
