The Winnipeg Art Gallery is moving to a new membership model that will give young adults free entry once Qaumajuq, the Inuit art centre, opens in February.
The free membership is available to people aged 18 to 25. It will cost $35 for those over 25. Youth under 18 will be able enter for free without signing up for a membership.
Gallery director Stephen Borys called the changes "an open invitation to share in the light of Qaumajuq — this place belongs to you."
The so-called friend memberships, available now for pre-order, are similar to the annual pass introduced recently by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
The Winnipeg gallery's new membership model also includes friend with benefits, partner and patron memberships with special perks.
The gallery will offer free admission to Indigenous Peoples with the opening of Qaumajuq as part of its efforts to advance reconciliation.
As well, Qaumajuq's main floor, featuring a visible vault with thousands of Inuit carvings, will be free.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery, temporarily closed due to COVID-19, will also continue to offer free entry on the second Sunday of the month.
