Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq hires Indigenous Assistant Curator
The Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq has hired Marie-Anne Redhead as assistant curator of Indigenous and contemporary art.
Redhead, of Ininiwak and Francophone heritage, is a member of the Fox Lake Cree Nation of northern Manitoba.
In 2020, she helped organize a short-video program, Un/Spoken, as part of Sovereign Intimacies, a collaboration between Winnipeg’s Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and Gallery 1C03 at the University of Winnipeg.
Redhead, who has a 2021 bachelor's degree in English from the University of Winnipeg, first worked at the gallery as part of an initiative to rename artworks and then joined its advancement team last year.
"Her work has already been instrumental in our efforts towards decolonization," says gallery director Stephen Borys. "I look forward to seeing the impact of her vision."
Redhead says she looks forward to helping "highlight and centre" Indigenous art at the gallery, and to collaborating with the community.
