Artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan have been recognized for their "exceptional and enduring" arts practice with a Career Achievement in the Arts award from the Winnipeg Arts Council.
The duo, known for funny feminist work and provocative performances, films and videos, are now working as part of the design team for for Thunderhead, the 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument in Ottawa.
Other arts awards went to Rosanna Deerchild, a Cree storyteller, journalist, broadcaster and poet; Emily Solstice Tait, an emerging dance artist; and Alan Greyeyes, an advocate to help Indigenous artists build their careers.
The council's executive director, Carol Phillips, praised the work of artists through the pandemic and urged people to continue supporting the arts.
"The recovery for public and in-person participation in the arts has begun, but it will take all of us to demand that the arts flourish and continue to make Winnipeg the place we want it to be," she said.
The winners were announced recently by Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham.
