Winnipeg's Urban Shaman Opens Santa Fe Satellite
Winnipeg's Urban Shaman, an artist-run gallery for Indigenous artists, is opening a satellite gallery hosted by Vital Spaces in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The first show, ASAP, by Kevin McKenzie, a Cree/Métis artist from Regina, runs from April 25 to June 29.
McKenzie's work reflects the urban environment, interweaving materials and processes with various narratives.
"With lightning fast Internet and social-media platforms, it's hard for one to distinguish what is real in this day and age," he says.
"I've replaced the real for the hyper-real by utilizing latex for skin, polyurethane for bone, acrylic and neon for pigment. Indigenous motifs and iconography are ever present in my output."
McKenzie, a member of the Cowessess First Nation of Saskatchewan, is in the MFA program at the University of Regina. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina and other institutions.
