Still Max – a film by Katherine Knight about Toronto interdisciplinary artist Max Dean — premieres at Hot Docs this month.
The film follows Dean as he uses art to face prostate cancer.
Vulnerability is nothing new for Dean. “All of my work has been affected by my life and my being," he says. "It’s not an abstraction. It’s about my reality.”
The film features discarded figures from an old amusement ride that help Dean address the question: "How do we fix ourselves?”
Dean won the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts in 2014 and has done extensive performance work.
