Zoë Chan Hired as Curator for Richmond Art Gallery
Nan Capogna and Zoë Chan
The Richmond Art Gallery in Metro Vancouver has hired Zoë Chan as its next curator.
Chan, who starts in mid May, has a Master's degree in art history from Concordia University in Montreal and has worked at arts organizations across Canada for more than two decades.
"Chan is recognized as a thoughtful and skilled curator, writer and researcher whose exhibitions have explored a range of subject matter, including youth, food, embodied storytelling, hybrid documentary practices and diasporic representation," the gallery said.
Most recently, Chan curated or co-curated exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery that included Uncommon Language, Where do we go from here? and Stories that animate us. In 2015, the Canada Council for the Arts awarded her the Joan Lowndes Award in recognition of excellence in critical and curatorial writing.
Chan said the gallery's goals of promoting dialogue around contemporary issues and engaging with diverse communities fit with her desire to develop "rigorous, accessible programming that represents a rich range of aesthetics, perspectives and approaches.”
She replaces Nan Capogna, who was curator for 22 years, including two years as interim director, and often highlighted the work of underrepresented local artists.
